Using the Rotating Slide Rule |
|
|
 |
Multiplication and division
With the rotating slide rule, you can also easily
perform frequently used [multiplication] and [division].
In this case the base becomes the fixed scale "10",
the unit index as mentioned above.
<Example>
Find the value of "25 x 14"
Rotate the "14" of the moving scale to
the unit index "10". At this setting,
"35" on the moving scale lines up with
"25" on the fixed scale. Since the product
of "25 x 14" can be anticipated to be
a 3 digits, the answer becomes "350, i.e.,
10 times 35. |
|
Currency conversion
By applying 1., it becomes possible to perform currency
conversion as well.
<Example> Find
the value of US$ 20.00 in Japanese yen at an exchange
rate of US$ 1.00=105. Rotate "10.5" on
the moving scale (divide by 10 since there is no
scale for (105) to the index unit "10"
of the fixed scale. At this setting, "21"
on the moving scale lines up with "20"
on the fixed scale. Since "US$20.00" can
be anticipated to be in 4 digits when converted
into Japanese yen, the answer is 100 times 21, that
is "2,100". |

 |
Distance conversion
You can freely convert units of distance such as
the status mile, nautical mile, and kilometer. As
shown on the fixed scale, "NAUT" is nautical
mile
<Example> Convert
20 nautical miles into both kilometers and nautical
miles. Rotate "20" on the moving scale
to the triangular index position of "STAT"on
the fixed scale. At ths setting, "32.2"
on the moving scale lines up with the triangular
index position of "KM" on the fixed scale.
Also, "17.4" on the moving scale lines
up with the triangular index position of "NAUT
on the fixed scale. Thus, you will find that 20 status
miles corresponds to "32.2 kilometers"
and "17.4 nautical miles". |
